You Don't Have to Be a Legend

to Protect Your Legacy ...

It is easy to think of estate planning as a concern only for "the 1%", but the reality is that everyone should consider their families' interests no matter what your financial situation.

Here are a few famous people who died intestate.  You might recognize some of them from the public legal battles that took place between family and friends.
............................

1. Jimi Hendrix:  died 1970, battle over estate lasted 30+ years

2. Bob Marley:  died 1981, battle over estate valued at over $30 million

3. Salvatore Phillip "Sonny" Bono:  died 1998, battle between exes and           "love child" who came forward after his death

4. Pablo Picasso:  died 1973, battle lasting 6 years and costing $30 million

5. Michael Jackson:  died 2009, will was later discovered, but upon his death, his mother filed court papers claiming that Jackson died intestate. His estate generated over $242 million between 2009 and 2010.

6. Abraham Lincoln:  died intestate in 1865 despite being a lawyer himself!

Types of Wills will being signed

Living wills and advance directives for medical decisions describe your preferences regarding treatment if you're faced with a serious accident or illness. This will speak for you should you be unable to do so yourself - for example, if you're in a coma.

  • Advance Directives describe your medical care preferences:
    • Living will:  written, legal document that spells out types of medical treatments and life-sustaining measures you want and don't want, (i.e., mechanical breathing, tube feeding or resuscitation.)  Also known as: health care declarations or health care directives.

    • Medical or health care power of attorney (POA):  legal document that designates an individual who is referred to as your personal health care agent or proxy.  He or she will make medical decisions for you in the event that you're unable to do so.

    • Do not resuscitate (DNR) order:  a request to not have cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if your heart stops or if you stop breathing. Advance directives do not have to include a DNR order, and you don't have to have an advance directive to have a DNR order. Your doctor can put a DNR order in your medical chart.
